The Mayor has said that Transport for London bus fares will go up by 5.9% from March. In addition, the temporary ban on using the over-60s’ London Oyster photocard and Freedom Pass before 9 am on weekdays will become permanent. Holders will continue to have to pay if they wish to travel on weekday mornings between 4.30am and 9am, though travel remains free and unlimited at weekends and on bank holidays. The qualifying age will remain at 60 (which applies to those still working as well as to the retired). No changes will apply to holders of the Disabled Persons Freedom Pass, who can travel for free before 9 am.
The context of all this is that TfL revenues took a huge hit during the pandemic, and thanks to working from home and other factors, have not fully recovered. TfL therefore required emergency funding from the Government.
