Dear Members and Friends
The next Hyde Park Estate Association pub evening will be held on
Tuesday 19th March. The topic for this evening has been chosen because
the Committee has had numerous complaints about the worrying incidents
of crime on the Hyde Park Estate and the apparent inability of the
police to deal with it, due to their own reductions in manpower. As a
consequence, the HPEA is exploring the possibility of employing a
private security firm to patrol the Estate, if we can find an
appropriate mechanism to pay for it, and if enough residents are in
At this meeting you, as members of the HPEA, will have an opportunity
to hear from one such security company. On this occasion we will be
pleased to welcome Karen Connell and Jacob Hunter of Hunter Protection, a
private security firm based in Westminster. Karen and Jacob will tell
us about the service that their company provides and how it might
benefit our area. They will, I am sure, be able to answer any questions
we may have in order to help us decide whether this is a route worth
pursuing. Our Chairman Allen Zimbler will host the evening.
We will meet as usual in the upstairs Theatre Bar of the Victoria on the
corner of Strathearn Place and Sussex Place from 6.15 – 8.00pm. I hope
that as many of you as possible will come along and please feel free to
invite any of your neighbours who may be interested in these issues and
in joining our association. This should be a most interesting evening
and I look forward to seeing you there.

Dear Members and Friends
The next pub evening of the Hyde Park Estate Association will take place on Tuesday 19th February. I am pleased to say that on this occasion we will have as our speaker, Tim Downes, Development Director of British Land who will tell us about their proposed new development at 5 Kingdom Street in Paddington Central. The site is currently being used by the pop up food venue known as Pergola next to the Novotel Hotel. Tim will tell us about the plans that British Land has for the site and how it will contribute to the whole Paddington Central offering. He will of course be very happy to answer any questions you may have,
We will meet as usual in the upstairs Theatre Bar of the Victoria Pub on the corner of Sussex Place and Strathearn Place W2 from 6.15 – 8.00pm. Please do come along to meet and chat with other members and to find out about this proposed new development in our area. Although the formal ‘meeting’ finishes at 8.00pm you are very welcome to stay on for a drink or a meal, taking advantage of the wonderful ambience of our local pub.
With kind regards
Message from Susan Quinn:
The Hyde Park Estate Association will hold its next monthly pub evening on Tuesday 16th October. We are now back to our usual third Tuesday of the month time slot and I hope that this will make it easier for you to remember the date. At this meeting we are pleased to be be hosting all three of our Hyde Park Ward Councillors, Heather Acton, Antonia Cox and Ian Adams. Ian has been newly elected as one of our ward councillors this year but many of you will know him already as he has been a past Lord Mayor of Westminster and he lives in the Hyde Park Estate. All three Councillors will be updating us on Westminster City Council activities and especially those that affect us in our area. They will of course also be happy to answer your questions and to hear your views and concerns. This should be an extremely interesting and valuable evening and I do hope that as many of you as possible will try to come along.
We will meet as usual in the upstairs Theatre Bar of the Victoria on Strathearn Place, starting at our new earlier time of 6.15 as we have to vacate the room at 8.00pm. Anyone wishing to stay on for a meal or other refreshments after that time is welcome to do so but it will be open to other members of the public at that time.
If you know of any members who are not currently receiving our emails, please pass this on to them and ask them to email email@example.com
to ensure that they are on our email list.
CHANGE OF DATE: SEPTEMBER PUB EVENING WILL BE THURS 20TH
Message from Susan Quinn
September is now upon us and with that our first pub evening of the new season. The date for our next meeting will be Thursday 20th September and not the third Tuesday of the month which is our usual date. It was originally planned that our speakers for our September pub evening would be our three Westminster City councillors but due to unexpected conflicting meetings our councillors cannot attend but will be joining us instead on Tuesday 16th October. However I am pleased to say that we do have another speaker for that evening and I hope as many as possible of you will be able to come along.
Our speaker will Stephen Spavin, the Outreach and Befriending Support Co-ordinator for Age UK Westminster. As I am sure you are aware Age UK does a great deal of valuable work in the community and Stephen will speak to us about some of the activities, services and projects that they provide. In particular he is involved in the Befriending programme but will also be able to provide a broad overview of the other work that is done by Age UK in our community.
We will meet as usual in the upstairs Theatre Bar of the Victoria Pub on Strathearn Place from 6.15 – 8.00pm on Thursday 20th September. It will be a good opportunity to meet up with friends and neighbours after the summer break and to enjoy a drink or two in a most convivial atmosphere. As this is our first get together after the summer we will also devote some time to discussing any issues that you would like to raise with the HPEA or would like us to be aware of. This is the place to air your views and help us to make our community the best possible place to live.
So please NOTE THE DATE – and I look forward to seeing you at the Victoria on the 20th.

The next HPEA pub evening will be held on Tuesday 19th June at our new time from 6.15 – 8.00pm. Our speaker for the evening will be Chris Peers, Manager of the Paddington BID (Business Improvement District). Many of you will know Chris and everyone will be very interested in what he has to tell us about the latest happenings in the area including their new Community Safety Team and their 2018 entries to London In Bloom and Britain In Bloom. Chris will be very happy to take questions and to fill you in on all the news related to developments in the Paddington BID area.
We may also be welcoming some members of the new Westminster Council SWAT (Street Waste Action Team). They are about to start a pilot project to reduce rubbish dumping across the ward and would like input from residents – so this will be your chance to have your say on what you think needs to be done about this persistent problem.
It should be a very interesting evening and I do hope that as many of you as possible will be able to come along. We will meet as usual in the upstairs Theatre Bar of the Victoria, corner of Strathearn Place and Sussex Place. Please feel free to invite others in the area who may wish to join our association.
Unfortunately I will not be able to be there on the 19th but Maria Parpou, our Treasurer, will be hosting the evening and I am sure she is looking forward to welcoming all of you.
As many of you will know our usual venue for our monthly pub evenings, The Victoria, has been closed for refurbishment and will not reopen until the end of March.
We have therefore decided not to hold a pub evening this month but will resume in April once the Victoria has reopened. Susan Quinn will confirm the date and time of the April meeting shortly, and also let you know what the topic for the evening will be.
Our first pub evening of 2018 will take place on Wednesday 17 January, not Tuesday 16 as would normally be the case. On this occasion we are pleased to have as our speaker Jay Miller, a resident of our area and keen user of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens who has been campaigning about the problems some cyclists inside the parks pose for pedestrians and their pets. Jay has taken to filming his outings in the park and would like to share his experiences with us. This should be a very interesting presentation and discussion, so please do come along to hear what he has to say.
We will meet as usual in the Upstairs Theatre Bar of the Victoria pub on Strathearn Place from 6.30pm – 8.30pm. This is a good opportunity to meet up with your friends and neighbours in the New Year so we hope to see you there. Please also feel free to extend this invitation to others in our area who may wish to find out more about the HPEA and to join our association.
Our next pub evening of the autumn season will take place on Tuesday 21 November. On this occasion we will have as our speaker Sue Price, Chairman of the Friends of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Many of you will know Sue and will be interested to hear what has been going on in our local park in recent months and what is being planned for the future. The Friends of HP and KG do a great deal of work to make our park the wonderful amenity it is for our community – please give this evening your support!
We will meet as usual in the upstairs Theatre Bar of the Victoria Pub on Strathearn Place from 6.30 – 8.30 pm. Sue will speak at 7.00 but please come early to have a drink and a chat with your neighbours beforehand. As always there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion following her talk. We also are happy for you to invite any neighbours who may be interested in joining our association to come along.
At our first pub evening of the New Year on Tuesday 17 January we are delighted to have as our speaker a member of the Royal Parks policing team who works in our ‘local’ Hyde Park. PC Stephen Barnes will be giving us a short talk on ‘Policing in the Parks’ covering all those issues which are dear to our hearts – cycling, dogs, rough sleepers, etc – and of course any others which you may wish to raise with him.
As most of us make regular use of this wonderful amenity right on our doorstep, you will doubtless want to hear how the Parks Police look after it and keep it safe for our enjoyment. So please come along armed with questions and as usual a lively discussion will follow.
We will meet in the upstairs Theatre Bar of the Victoria Pub on Strathearn Place from 6.30 – 8.30pm. The talk will start at 7pm but do come early to have a drink and chat with friends. Please feel free to invite any of your neighbours who may like to hear PC Barnes and who may be interested in joining our Association.
